At the NFFF Fish and Chip Awards hosted in London on the 28th February 2023, the winners of the blue ribband award for Best Fish and Chip Takeaway 2023 went to Whiteheads Fish and Chips in Hornsea, East Yorkshire. An incredible 26 years of hard work, dedication and perseverance saw Geoff and his mum Hazel Whitehead turn a dilapidated estate chippy into the very best in the UK. In working closely with Geoff for the last 12 years since XpressFish began trading, we have seen at first hand the pure effort that has gone into making this achievement happen. Sourcing the finest oils, local potatoes and the best fish available and combining that with exceptional customer service in a modern takeaway/restaurant environment, it is no surprise to us that Whitehead’s won the top award. It couldn’t have been more deserved or gone to a nicer person and here at XpressFish, we are thrilled for all of the team at Whitehead’s. We are especially proud that in addition to many other finalists from the awards, Geoff’s number one choice of fish is our Thorfish brand from Iceland. Consistent supply of the same brand of fish from the crystal clear waters of Iceland is something that Geoff has been able to rely upon for the last 12 years. It was also very fitting that the owners of the Thorfish vessels were there to witness the event and were incredibly proud and completely overawed by Geoff’s success. The same Thorfish brand also helped Alex from The Bearded Sailor in Pudsey and Sheera Dhillon’s The Fisherman’s Bay in Whitley Bay to become a Top 10 UK chippy. Also, massive congratulations to Gary and his team at The Lighthouse Fisheries in Flamborough and David from Auckley Frier near Doncaster for their nominations. The Lighthouse Fisheries in Flamborough also won Best Newcomer. Our congratulations go out everyone for your outstanding achievements. The future of the nation’s favourite dish is in safe hands as the NFFF awards continue to raise the incredible standards in our industry. We must also give a special mention to Andrew Crook, Josette Foster, Caroline Murphy, Lesley Graves and everyone involved at the NFFF for their seamless transition in hosting the first awards since 2019 in what was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion for all who attended.
